Amsterdam has long been my favorite city in the world. Bicycles, tulips, fine art, canals, tall women, pancakes, and most importantly, the coffee shops.
Ah, the coffee shops. It feels so civilized to sit at a Dutch coffee shop with a fine cup of joe, roll a nice joint, sit, relax and enjoy it all. Nobody looks at you weird, and the weed menus are comprehensive and high quality. Nobody freaks out, although there are always tourists from Italy or Spain that are so stoned they just stare off into space for hours. But they’re not hurting anybody.
Compare this to alcohol. Alcoholic drunks crash their cars and kill people, beat their wives, get in bar fights, get cirrhosis of the liver, lose their jobs and generally ruin their lives. Potheads get stoned, listen to Bob Marley and Pink Floyd videos, and eat Cool Ranch Doritos. Potheads really aren’t hurting anybody.
When I was in college, when we’d get stoned Cool Ranch Doritos were the best thing ever for us. It was a divine experience. To this day I still call them our college nickname, Blue Jesus.
But there is a disaster brewing in Holland. The Dutch government is closing coffee shops to foreigners.
To quote from the article:
On Friday, the Dutch Cabinet endorsed a recommendation from the country’s ministers of health and justice that all coffee shops that sell marijuana should become “private clubs” for Dutch citizens only.
This is most unwelcome news, and is also incredibly stupid of the Dutch government. Tourism is what keeps Amsterdam going, and visitors to the coffee shops are a major driver of that tourism. All this will do is drive weed into the brown or black market, and send tourists elsewhere. Potheads need hotel rooms, and definitely drive the entire Amsterdam falafel market. I personally will no longer make my annual journey to Amsterdam until this idiotic and reactionary policy is reversed. Single Dude Travel regretfully must withdraw it’s endorsement of Amsterdam as a single dude friendly location.
Please Holland, don’t be a buzz kill. You can’t do this to us!
